Experience
National Institute of Education from July 2003 - present
Currently enrolled in NIE as a trainee teacher to teach art in secondary schools. To graduate in May of 2005 in Diploma in Art Education

Designer at Kingsmen Pte.Ltd. from August 2001 - Nov 2002.
My job at Kingsmen was to assist in retail projects under FJ Benjamin Holdings such as Guess, Manchester United and Gucci Boutiques, As well as some of the United Overseas Bank Branches.

Designer at Designphase Pte. Ltd. From March 2001 - July 2001 (Contract )
In Designphase my scope of work involves producing some designs as well as producing Cad drawings, material sourcing and liasing with suppliers and contractors.

Intermediate Designer at Space Partnership Pte. Ltd. from March 2000 - December
I was involved in the design of Malayan Banking Tower and a couple of its Branches.
I was also involved in the project for Zouk Discotheque.

Freelance work in Australia from May 1999 - June 1999
While I was studying in Australia, I did some freelance work for one of the major advertising company in Australia, Mojo Partners. My team’s undertaking was to design a Consumer Planning Research Area. The job requires us to design, produce contract drawings as well as source for materials and liase with builders.

Designer at Space Partnership Pte. Ltd. from 1 May 1995 – February 1997
Space Partnership is a consultancy firm, which deals mainly in commercial design.
My scope of works includes conceptual space planning, preparations for presentations and contract submissions as well as liasing with clients, suppliers and contractors.

Manipex Pte. Ltd. from March 1995 - April 1995
Manipex mainly deals in exhibition design and commercial design. However, they also handle residential projects. In the short time I was there, my scope was conceptializing design booths/areas. I also had to do fully rendered presentation drawings.

Strategic Renovation Ideas Pte. Ltd. from July 1994 – February 1995
Strategic Renovation is a design and contracting company that mainly deals in residential design. There my task was to do sales and space planning and design as well as reviewing of construction site progress.

Others
Worked in Ben Franklin during University holidays as a store assistant where I teach children to paint and do Arts and Crafts.

Skills
Proficient in Auto-Cad 14 and 2000, as well as Photoshop.
Learned Auto-Cad Release 13 when I was working in Space Partnership.
Took Auto-Cad Release 14 and 2000 and 3-D Studio Max subjects at university.
Construction Detailing. Design Planning. Material/Finishes selection.
Proficient in printmaking, pottery, Batik art, Painting and drawing and woodwork.

Artist Statement...

First and foremost I would never call myself an artist, I would call myself a designer because that is where most of my training lies. Designer deals with the tangible, especially interior designers, we deal with space, materials, plans and work schedules. Things that could be planned and achieved. However, in this rigid designer head of mine, I am slowly changing into the so called intangible artistic idiosyncrasies. I am an Artist, because i feel for other artists, I get worked up when people around me dismiss art as something that is not important and I want to fight for art. I want to fight for my students that I will be teaching to make them feel proud that they are doing Art and their art works are beautiful and they have meaning and value.For my exhibition project I will mix my interior design and my artistic idiosyncrasies to create an interactive sculpture of building blocks. Twenty-nine pieces in all; to represent twenty-nine art teachers with twenty-nine hopes, dreams and struggles to promote art in twenty-nine schools around Singapore.

Shy

This is another one of my Dragon vs Orchid series. This is a woodblock print; black against coloured background on paper. I call this print 'Shy' because it is depicting an orchid that is not in full bloom, it looks hesitant and is caught between curiosity and its shy nature. I also associate shyness with femininity, maybe bacause throughout my growing up years my grandmother and mother always told me that girls and women should always be shy... whatever that means... :p

Dragon charm

This is one of my many Dragon vs Orchid series. This is a silkscreen print using the paper template. The story of the Dragon vs Orchid series is a personal struggle between my tomboyish self and my new found femininity. It is a struggle of coming of age and of settling down where my feminine side is taking over the tomboyish pesona that I once was or vice versa.

'Flag' of the Nation. A collaboration of two artists, Tasneem and myself.

'Flag' of the Nation

This a collaboration between two artists; Tasneem and myself. The idea is to have a piece of artwork that when taken apart could stand by itself and when put together speaks of a different idea altogether. Tasneems work was primarily derived from the three letter acronyms that is uniquely Singaporean while mine was the idea of what Singaporeans think of when they think about Singapore. Words are being interweaved with images that are either silkscreened or pasted. We also decide to do our art in the style of 'The Fabric of the Nation'; however our version is not so well put together in the sense that the edges are frayed, its glued and not sewn together, the idea was to address the rigidness of this nation and its government at the time.

Teapot, the reason for the 'wiggling' shape is because this is a combination of coiling at the bottom and pinching at the top. When combined it creates this interesting shape for a teapot.

This teapot has two combination techniques; the coiling technique and the pinching technique. This was quite a difficult piece beacuse the two techniques have to fit together well. The coiling at the base was easy but the pinch pot at the top was quite difficult because I had to do several sizes in order to get the right fit. All in all this was a good experience and I had a good time creating this piece. c",)
